Why is Tire Rotation Important?

Why is it important to rotate your tires in Folsom? As your vehicle drives and its tires spin, the outside edges of your front tires obtain more wear and tear than the back tires. Thus, rotating tires allows them to wear out more evenly. Doing this makes it much more likely that you’ll be able to replace all your tires at the same time as well as increasing your overall tire lifespan.

How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Typically, front and rear tires should be rotated every 5,000-7,500 miles. The exception is vehicles with all-wheel drive since all their tires are always actively engaged. These vehicles should have tire rotations every 3,000-5,000 miles. Check your owner’s manual for your recommended tire rotation schedule.

Learn More About the Importance of Tire Position

Rotating tires differs depending on FWD or RWD:

  • FWD Tires: When rotating FWD tires, move the front tires to the back in the same left and right positions. However, when moving the rear to the front, switch the right and left tire.
  • RWD Tires: With RWD tires, do the opposite. Front tires are switched right and left when moved to the back. Rear tires go forward in the same right and left positions.

How to Rotate Your Tires at Home

When learning how to do a tire rotation, you’ll need a car jack, lug nut wrench, and a set of car jacks. Then, follow these seven steps:

  1. Turn your parking brake on.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels, but do not remove the wheels yet.
  3. Lift up the car with the car jack.
  4. Remove the tires one at a time.
  5. If you’re able, fill the tires if they need air. Place the tires back onto the appropriate wheel mount.
  6. Retighten the lug nuts by hand.
  7. Lower the car from the jack stands. Then fully tighten the lug nuts with the wrench.
